The companies controlled by Mr. Murray, in part, include: The Ohio Valley Coal Company, which owns and operates the 5.5 million ton per year Powhatan No. 6 underground Mine in Ohio; Maple Creek Mining, Inc., which produces 3.2 million tons annually from its Maple Creek Mine in Pennsylvania; Energy Resources, Inc. and TDK Coal Sales, Inc., which operate surface mines producing about 600,000 tons per year in north central Pennsylvania; KenAmerican Resources, Inc., which produces 2.2 million tons annually from the Paradise Mine in western Kentucky; The American Coal Company (AmCoal), which operates the 7.5 million ton per year Galatia Mine in southern Illinois; and PennAmerican Coal, L.P., which produces 800,000 tons annually from the Burrell Mine in central Pennsylvania. He also owns The Ohio Valley Transloading Company, which operates an intermodal barge/train/truck transloading facility at MilePost 111 on the Ohio River; MonValley Transportation Center, Inc., a barge/train/truck transloading and storage center at MilePost 20 on the Monongahela River; The American Coal Sales Company, the marketing arm of the aforementioned companies; and a number of other coal holding companies. Projects under development include the 5.5 million ton per year Century Mine of American Energy Corporation, in Ohio, the 3.0 million ton per year Lila Canyon Mine of UtahAmerican Energy, Inc., in Utah, and the 1.2 million ton per year Spring Church Mine of Spring Church Coal Company in Pennsylvania. Mr. Murray was formerly President and Chief Executive Officer of The North American Coal Corporation (North American). He served North American for 31 years, beginning his career while studying mining engineering at The Ohio State University, where he also was a Departmental Assistant. From Assistant to the Manager of Industrial Engineering and Coal Preparation, Mr. Murray went on to serve in every mine management and supervisory capacity at North American, from Section Foreman through Superintendent. He became Assistant to the President of the Cleveland-based company in 1968 and was elected Vice President-Operations in 1969, in which position he was instrumental in assembling and marketing the Company=s large lignite reserves in the West and in negotiating the long term coal sales arrangements therefor. From 1974 to 1983, he served as President of North American's Western Division and also as President of four subsidiaries in North Dakota. He then returned to the Cleveland headquarters as Executive Vice President-Operations in 1983 and subsequently was elected President and Chief Operating Officer, and then President and Chief Executive Officer of North American and its subsidiaries. During his over forty-three year career in the mining industry, Mr. Murray has received numerous awards, including the Erskine Ramsay, Howard N. Eavenson, and Distinguished Member Awards from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. (SME) of A.I.M.E., of which he was President in 1989, as well as awards from the Independent Coal Operators Association, Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, North Dakota Lignite Council, and others. He was Ohio=s Coal Man of the Year this past year, and he is currently a member of the Boards of Directors of the National Mining Association, Center for Energy and Economic Development, Pennsylvania Coal Association, and Ohio Coal Association, and serves on the National Coal Council and the Advisory Board of the National Mining Hall of Fame. He is currently President of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. a world-wide organization of the Iron and Steel Society, Society of Petroleum Engineers, The Metallurgical Society, and SME. Mr. Murray has completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business and holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Degree from The Ohio State University. Mr. Murray is a licensed Professional Engineer and private pilot. Mr. Murray is very active in civic and political matters. He resides with his wife, Brenda, in Moreland Hills, Ohio. Their sons, Rob, Jon, and Ryan, are involved in coal mining. Rob, a graduate of the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University (WVU), is working in marketing and sales management with the Murray companies, and Jon and Ryan are studying geology and mining engineering, respectively, at WVU.
